Cybersecurity is no longer only about protecting devices, networks, or email inboxes. As businesses move deeper into cloud platforms, AI tools, remote access, and automated systems, identity has become one of the most important security layers. Sophos’ State of Identity Security 2026 report highlights how serious this issue has become. According to Sophos, 71% of organisations experienced at least one identity-related breach in the past year, with affected organisations facing an average of three identity attacks within that period.

This shows a clear message for businesses: attackers are not only trying to break into systems. They are trying to log in as trusted users, service accounts, and digital identities.

Identity Breaches Are Becoming a Main Business Risk

Every login, password, admin account, API key, service account, and cloud credential can become a possible entry point for attackers. As organisations use more cloud services and AI systems, the number of identities they need to manage continues to grow. Sophos reported that identity-related breachers are now widespread across industries, with some sectors experiencing particularly high breach rates. The energy, oil and gas, and utilities sector recorded the highest breach rate at 80%, while IT and technology organisations reported the lowest at 63%.

For businesses, this means identity security cannot be treated as a one-time setup. It needs continuous monitoring, access control, multi-factor authentication, regular account reviews, and fast detection of suspicious login activity.

Compromised Identities Can Lead to Ransomware

One of the most important findings from Sophos is the connection between identity compromise and ransomware. Sophos found that 67% of ransomware victims said their ransomware incident was directly linked to their most significant identity attack. This matters because ransomware does not always start with advanced hacking. In many cases, attackers may gain access through stolen credentials, weak passwords, misused admin accounts, phishing, or poorly managed access permissions.

Once an attacker controls a trusted identity, they may move across systems, access sensitive files, disable security tools, or prepare for ransomware deployment. For businesses, identity protection is now part of ransomware prevention.

Non-Human Identities Are Creating New Security Gaps

Identitiy security is no longer only about employees. Sophos highlighted the growing risk of non-human identities, including API keys, service accounts, automated workflows, and AI agents. These identities often operate in the background and may have broad access to systems, data, or applications. Sophos noted that weak non-human identiti management was a root cause in 41% of successful identity breaches. The report also found that only 34% of organisations regularly audit or rotate service accounts and non-human identities.

This creates a major blind spot. If these accounts are not reviewed, secured, or rotated properly, attackers may exploit them to move deeper into the business environment without being noticed.
